Taavi Sulander, Jaakko Kullberg, Jari Helstola ja Raisa Tanner (kameran takana) olivat saaressa pääsiäisen alla kaksi päivää. Jaakko ja Taavi olivat kevään ensimmäisellä käynnillään Örössä – kokemusta heillä on saaresta monen vuoden ajalta. Luonnontieteellisen keskusmuseon museomestari Jaakko on tehnyt perhostutkimusta saaressa vuodesta 1990 lähtien, joten vuosien kuluessa niin saaren hyönteis- kuin lintumaailmakin on käynyt tutuksi.

Robins invading Finland

One week ago, I heard my first City Robin (Erithacus rubecula) singing its fabulous verses in my home yard, in the center of the city of Turku. It is one of my annual moments of joy, and according to the mini-laboratory of our yard, an example of bird fauna being able to accept the quarters of block houses as its home, following the road paved by concrete and asphalt that has already been treaded by earlier pioneers, the Magpie (Pica pica) and Ringed Dove (Columba palumbus) in Finland.

The Bird Brigadiers made it yesterday to the first page of the Internet bird database “Tiira” held by BirdLife Finland: a total of 150 robins were scattered in the island’s bushes yesterday – I can only imagine the sound of ringing bells that must have filled the air!
 

The amount of Crested Tits (Parus cristatus) was 15, but they are the resident population in contrast to Robins. Their big amount reflects the old pine forest being their ecological niche in our forest. The morning migration will be scanned today, but the sea was already yesterday bursting with waterfowl, and the first edge of the main migration of a few species had landed on the waters around the island: 4200 Eiders (Somateria mollissima),  21 Red-necked Grebes (Podiceps griseigena) and 7 Slavonian Grebes (Podiceps auritus).

Some basics about Örö Bird Brigade

There have been a few visitors already to the recently opened Örö Bird Brigade blog, among others from the USA, Germany, Latvia and Estonia.

It is not known to me whether the foreign visitors have found the blog via their interest in military affairs (brigade), but perhaps as a disappointment to them, the Örö Bird Brigade was established with other motives. Of course the presence of the military on the island, which continued close to 100 years, has had an impact on the environment. Even though the landscape we now observe is structured by stone paved roads, small scale building and courts held partly open by military exercises, the military presence has saved it from alternative, heavier land use.

Örön lintuprikaati -alkio

Olen julkaissut kirjan Ahvenanmaan itäisen saarikunnan, Kökarin, linnuista. Sen pohjana oli lintuharrastustyö, josta harrastajien avustamana keräsin täydelliset havainnot yli sadalta saareen vuoden eri kuukausina tehdyltä retkeltä (Ari Linna, 2007, Lintujen Kökar, saaristolintuja ennen ja nyt / Fåglarnas Kökar, skärgårdskommunens fåglar förr och nu, PQR , Pakett-kirjapaino/tryckeri, Viro/Estland 2007).

Metsähallituksen Jouko Högmander julkisti 26.3.2014 ulkomeren laidalla sijaitsevan saaren, Örön entisen varuskuntasaaren osalta samankaltaisen selvityspyynnön. Hän viestitti Turun Lintutieteellisen yhdistyksen Ukuli-internetverkossa: ”Etsimme 2-4 lintumiehen ryhmää, joka olisi valmis vuoden ajan retkeilemään esim. kerran kuukaudessa Kemiönsaaren Örössä, keräämään havaintoja, raportoimaan näkemästään ja kirjoittamaan siitä arvostetussa lintulehdessä, esim. Ukulissa. Metsähallitus järjestää luvat ja majoituksen sekä voi jossakin määrin auttaa kuljetuksissa. Yhteistyö edellyttää ryhmältä sitoutumista hankkeeseen.”
